Google Ads Is Changing Where Your Search Budget Goes. Here’s What to Check

By ceo.ayn@gmail.com October 30, 2026 3 min read

If you run Google Search campaigns, there’s a change coming that could quietly shift where your money gets spent. Nothing dramatic happens today, but February 2027 is close enough that it’s worth a quick look now. This is exactly the kind of update our performance marketing team tracks for clients, so we wanted to break it down in plain language.

What Is Changing?

Many Search campaigns have a setting called Display Expansion. It lets your ads show up on other websites and apps, not just on Google’s search results. Until now, Google handled this behind the scenes using a fixed 50% allocation.

From February 2027, Google will automatically move these campaigns to a new channel priority system. Instead of one hidden rule, you’ll choose how much preference each channel gets. The channels involved are Google Search results, search partners, and the Display Network.

How the New Controls Work

You can mark a channel as High or Low priority. For a Low priority channel, you can also set an optional share of your daily budget.

You can set these at the account level and override them for individual campaigns. So one campaign can follow different instructions without touching the rest of your account. That’s handy if you run several campaigns with different goals, such as lead generation in one and brand awareness in another.

If you’d like things to stay as they are today, Google says you can set the Display Network to Low priority with a 50% daily budget allocation.

The One Exception: Target Impression Share

This is the detail most people will miss. Search campaigns that use the Target Impression Share bidding strategy will stop showing on the Display Network after the change. If you rely on Display reach from those campaigns, plan for that now, and consider whether social media marketing could fill the gap in your reach.

Don’t Expect a Perfect Split

The allocation percentage can be confusing, so here’s an example. Say your campaign has an average daily budget of ₹2,000 and you give Display a 10% allocation. Google aims to keep Display at about ₹200.

Now imagine the campaign only spends ₹1,000 that day. Display’s ₹200 is then 20% of your actual spend, not 10%. That doesn’t mean the setting failed. The limit is based on your daily budget, not what you actually spend. Google also describes it as a best-effort limit, so a day can overshoot.

Also, if your campaign uses cost or return targets and isn’t held back by budget, priorities may not change your spending pattern much. The campaign keeps chasing its target across channels.

Watch Out: Early Changes Take Effect Straight Away

The new controls started rolling out on October 15, and availability differs by account and campaign type. If you apply channel priorities to a Search campaign before February, its old Display Expansion behavior is replaced right away. It won’t wait for the migration.

Paid search also works best alongside organic growth. Strong SEO keeps your site visible even on days when ad budgets run out.

Final Thoughts

Changes like this are easy to ignore until the numbers move. A few minutes of checking now can save you from a surprise in your cost per lead. If you’d like a second pair of eyes on your account, talk to our experts and we’ll review it with you.
